Many AI projects stall after the pilot. Asking these five questions early can save time, money and credibility.

It has never been easier to start an AI pilot. Turning a pilot into lasting value is much harder. Before committing budget, leaders can test any proposed project with five simple questions.

1. What business problem are we solving?

Start with a decision or process that matters, and describe how it will be better. If the answer is only "we should use AI", the project is not ready.

2. Do we have the right data?

Check that the data exists, is good enough, and can be used legally and ethically. Data problems are the most common reason AI projects slow down.

3. How will we measure success?

Agree on the measure before you begin, whether it is cost, time, quality, revenue or customer satisfaction, and record the starting point.

4. What could go wrong?

Consider errors, bias, privacy, security and the impact on customers and employees. Decide who is accountable and when a human must review the output.

5. Who will use it, and are they ready?

A model that nobody trusts or uses creates no value. Involve the people affected early, and plan for training and new ways of working.

These questions reflect themes covered across the modules of Kamber's Chief Digital and AI Officer program, including strategy, data, responsible AI and change leadership.
